What Is the Manufacturing Process of Laminated PVC Foam Board?

Aug 20,2025
PVC foam board is a versatile plastic material widely used in decoration, furniture, advertising, and construction. It is lightweight, durable, waterproof, and easy to process. To enhance its appearance and functionality, many customers prefer laminated PVC foam board. This type of board is not only strong and practical but also features attractive decorative surfaces such as wood grain, stone, or metallic finishes.
In this article, we will explain what laminated PVC foam board is made of and take you through the step-by-step manufacturing process.

What Is Laminated PVC Foam Board?

Laminated PVC foam board is a composite material that combines a foam core board with a decorative surface layer using a strong adhesive. Unlike regular PVC foam boards, the laminated version offers both structural strength and stylish finishes, making it ideal for interior decoration and modern furniture applications.
Common decorative effects include wood grain, stone texture, high-gloss surfaces, matte colors, and metallic looks.

Composition of Laminated PVC Foam Board

Common decorative effects include wood grain, stone texture, high-gloss surfaces, matte colors, and metallic looks.

Core Board (Substrate)

PVC Foam Board → lightweight, waterproof, easy to cut and shape.
WPC Foam Board → a wood–plastic composite with higher rigidity and strong nail-holding power.

Surface Material (Decorative Layer)

PVC Film – economical, colorful, and versatile.
PETG Film – glossy finish, scratch-resistant, and transparent.
HPL (High Pressure Laminate) – durable, heat-resistant, and suitable for heavy-duty use.
Aluminum Film / Sheet – provides a metallic appearance, moisture resistance, and fire retardancy.
Acrylic Sheet – delivers a modern, high-gloss surface with excellent weather resistance.

Adhesive (Bonding Layer)

PUR Hot Melt Adhesive – offers strong bonding strength, waterproof performance, heat resistance, and eco-friendly properties.
This three-layer structure ensures that laminated PVC foam board is aesthetic, durable, and functional for a wide range of decorative and commercial applications.

Step-by-Step Manufacturing Process

1. Foaming Extrusion of Core Board

The process begins with extruding the foam core board. PVC resin is mixed with stabilizers, foaming agents, and lubricants, then heated and extruded through a mold. The material is cooled, shaped, and cut into boards of the required thickness. Both free foam and celuka foam methods can be used.

2. Surface Treatment (Pre-lamination)

Before lamination, the board surface is prepared to ensure strong adhesion. This includes cleaning, sanding, and dust removal. A corona treatment or primer coating may be applied to improve the bonding between the substrate and decorative film.

3. Lamination Process

The chosen decorative film or sheet is laminated onto the foam board using a PUR hot melt lamination line. During this stage, temperature, pressure, and speed are carefully controlled to ensure a smooth, bubble-free, and wrinkle-free surface. Lamination can be applied on one side or both sides of the board.

4. Cooling and Trimming

After lamination, the board passes through a cooling section to stabilize the adhesive bond. Edges are trimmed, and the board is cut into standard sizes or customized dimensions.

5. Finishing & Quality Inspection

Finally, each laminated PVC foam board undergoes strict quality checks. Inspectors examine the surface for flatness, adhesion strength, and visual defects. Performance tests, such as scratch resistance, waterproofing, and durability, are also carried out to ensure high standards.

Advantages of Laminated PVC Foam Board

  • Attractive Appearance – wide range of decorative finishes including wood, stone, metallic, and high gloss.
  • Waterproof and Moisture-proof – suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, and humid environments.
  • Durable and Scratch-resistant – maintains a fresh look even with long-term use.
  • Lightweight and Easy to Process – simple to cut, drill, or shape for custom designs.
